Caught the beginning bit of SPAWN the feature film last night on the telly (WarnerTV cable channel#515 in Singapore), and relished at both the "darkness" of the film's intent and treatment, as much as the superhero-film adaptation which current cinema seem to want to reflect in their presentation - with this 1997 film more akin to DC Comic's dark-n-broody take on "reality" (ala "Dark Knight", "Man of Steel") versus Marvel's slightly more "sunshine" approach in their offerings thus far … compared to what happens "after the sunset", a horror-version of "Suicide Squad", where people do "bad things" gets a chance to do "right things", given the second chance to?

After the onset of comicbook superhero movies after Richard Donner's "Superman" (1978), things went slightly "dark" with memorable flicks like Tim Burton's "Batman" (1989) and "Batman Returns" (1992), Marvel's "Blade" (1998), and Alex Proyas' "The Crow" (1994 - which no doubt is closer to the tine of "Spawn", methinks). Yes I am discounting Joel Schumacher's "Batman Forever" (1995) and "Batman & Robin" (1997), because they never did take hold tother than themselves, IMHO.

I would readily admit to giving SPAWN a slight snub back in the day, as it was something that stood out a little "more" than the rest … maybe a little bit "too dark", which in THESE DAYS' standards, not so much as "kitschy" than "OMG YYEEEEEEEE!".

Nevertheless, I had been a nice reminder, even if I did not manage to be able to complete the viewing … but I have the trading cards tho! :p

"An assassin named Al Simmons is double-crossed and murdered by his evil boss Jason Wynn. Al makes a deal with the devil and returns to earth as Spawn to see his wife. He is ordered by the devil's minion, The Clown, to kill Wynn. Wynn has made a deal with the clown too and is suppose to destroy the world with a deadly virus that will help start Armageddon and allow Hell to attack Heaven. Spawn must choose between Good & Evil." (Written by Keith Haney "kbhaney@inconnect.com" on IMDb)
